The company I am working for is looking to begin auditing software on all its sites with a single tool. We are beginning in the UK and expanding to France, Australia and the USA. The problem I have is that we would like to use one tool - however we obviously have multiple sites and many of these do not link to or have access to a common network. I am looking for a software discovery product, preferably with a built in asset management database, or which can be integrated with an asset management database, capable of aiding us with the audit of installed software and the management of this software and licences going forward. We are estimate that we are going to be looking at auditing and managing around 6000 assets. It is probably worth saying that we intend to manage this in house and outsourcing the projectis not an option.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I have already found one product, however would like to compare against a few others. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know...

Hi Jplace,

EzGet technology uses an agent installed on each workstation to automatically track all activities and events, whether the workstation is connected to the network or not, whether the user is log in or not.
The principal tasks of EzGet agent are to constantly collect hardware and software data for the inventory, track the software usage and any modifications made to the hardware or Software.

EzGet agent uses the FTP protocol to transfers inventories and report files, so it can be used on a LAN network or a WAN like any internet FTP server with secure access.
This also means that an installed agent on a laptop anywhere in the world can send reports.

EzGet software supports different language like French or English. EzGet software meet all your requests and this is a low cost software with a quick return of investissment.

Hi JPlace,

ITA Logic provides an automated IT asset Management Software (DTA), that may be controlled from multiple or single locations. We have currently rolled out the DTA to clients with requiremnets exactly like you have described.

We will provide full training, to enable you to roll the software out, as well as offering on-going support for the project. This enables you to keep the project in-house, with a sound tier 3 support scenario.

The DTA provides a single user-friendly interface and the protocol is based on FTP and therefore can be sent to multiple locations, securley.

The DTA has many benefits and features ranging from bespoke reporting and software licence management through to remote control functionality including an asset management database.

We do not see a problem with rolling this out to 6000 pc's (our biggest client has over 25000).

Please feel free to contact me. We would be only too happy to provide a full demonstration.

Kind regards

Before selecting your install base discovery tool you must scope out your requirements. I large complex environments there is no silver bullet for discovery. I use a variety of tools, to get an acceptable and persistent coverage.

Here is some food for thought before you do your tool selection process...

What platforms are you trying to scan? (windows linux, hp, sun)
Is this a managed environment? (do you you have admin access on your machines? will users remove your agent)
What is your scan tool deployment process? Is this strategy going to be supported by your support teams?
Does the scan tool use a software catalogue how complete is the catalogue for you?
Does the scan tool use a registry scan?
Do you need to employ multiple tools, if so how will they communicate together so you can reconcile your license inventory?

Good Luck
